Does ChatGPT use Reddit? Perplexity cites it ten times more

Each AI engine reads a different internet, and ChatGPT's is the furthest from Google's. When the same buyer questions go to all four engines, Perplexity cites Reddit in a third of its English answers, ChatGPT in fewer than three in a hundred, and Claude not at all.

For a brand, that means there is no single AI source strategy. Work that lifts you in one engine can be invisible in the next, and most teams cannot see which is which, because the vendors do not publish where their citations come from. So we watch what the engines actually cite. Here is what September 2026 looked like.

What is being claimed about ChatGPT's sources?

Three claims circulate, and they pull in different directions.

That ChatGPT has stopped citing Reddit. Mostly drawn from people checking a handful of answers by hand.

That ChatGPT runs on Bing. OpenAI's help centre supports part of this. For Enterprise and Edu workspaces it says ChatGPT "may share disassociated search queries with the Bing search engine". For the consumer product it says only that ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers", and the privacy policies it points to are Microsoft's and Shopify's. Its healthcare workspaces use neither Bing nor outside data providers.

That ChatGPT uses Google. In August 2025 Semrush reported an experiment in which a page visible only to Google's index turned up in a ChatGPT Plus answer and not in the free version. The authors noted they did not know how often it happens.

All three can be partly true at once. The same help centre page explains why outside tests keep disagreeing: before it searches, ChatGPT rewrites your question into its own search queries, and it may use your location and your saved memories when it does. Two people typing the same question can trigger different searches.

What do the engines actually cite?

Beaconn monitors the same buyer questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, in several languages and markets, with web search switched on. For every answer we record each source the engine cites, and Google's top results for the same query.

Four engines, one set of questions, four quite different source diets.

Does ChatGPT cite Reddit?

Rarely, and unlike the other engines it hardly changes with language.

Reddit is overwhelmingly English, so an engine that uses it should reach for it far more often in English. Perplexity does, by a factor of fourteen. Gemini roughly triples. ChatGPT stays flat at under three percent, passing over Reddit even where Reddit is most abundant.

That is worth noticing because OpenAI has had a data partnership with Reddit since May 2024, which gives it access to Reddit's Data API. Having access to the content and choosing to cite it in an answer are evidently separate decisions.

Why does Claude never cite Reddit?

Across the whole of September, Claude did not cite reddit.com once. The public record gives context: Reddit sued Anthropic in June 2025 over alleged unauthorised scraping, and in doing so contrasted it with Google and OpenAI, both of which hold licensing agreements with Reddit.

Whatever the reason, the effect for a brand is simple. If your reputation lives in Reddit threads, Claude's search will not find it there.

Does ranking on Google get you into AI answers?

Less than most people assume, and least of all in ChatGPT. For each question we compare the domains an engine cites with the domains in Google's top organic results for that same question.

Two things stand out. Even Gemini, Google's own model, shares only about 15 percent of its cited domains with Google's organic results. And ChatGPT shares about a third as many as the other three engines. The gap holds in English, at 6.2 percent against 15 to 18, and in other languages, at 4.2 percent against 13 to 14.

That fits the view that ChatGPT's search draws on a different index from Google's, which is consistent with OpenAI's own references to Bing. Which index it is, no outside measurement can settle. What the data shows clearly is how little it behaves like Google's. Other published overlap figures run much higher, and our earlier piece on why AI search statistics contradict each other explains how far the counting rules alone can move numbers like these.

How many sources does ChatGPT cite?

About four and a half per answer, against nearly twenty for Perplexity. Each place in a ChatGPT answer is correspondingly harder to win. Being one of four or five sources is a different contest from being one of twenty, and it means the short list of pages ChatGPT trusts in your category matters more than the volume you publish.

What should a brand do with this?

Stop treating AI as one channel. The engines read different sources, so the same work lands differently in each.

  • Reddit pays off mainly in Perplexity, and mainly in English. It does little for ChatGPT and nothing for Claude.
  • Google rankings carry over partly to Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, and much less to ChatGPT.
  • ChatGPT cites few sources per answer, so find out which pages it trusts for your category's questions before publishing more.
  • Check each engine separately. When a brand is named at all, at least one of the four engines leaves it out of its answer to the identical question 82 percent of the time. A strong position in one engine says little about the next.

The averages on this page describe the market. Your category will have its own version: its own Reddit share, its own short list of pages ChatGPT trusts, its own gap between Google and the answer. That is what Beaconn shows. For every question your buyers ask, it records what each engine answers, which brands it names and which sources it cites, so you can put effort where the engine you care about is actually looking.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Reddit? Rarely as a cited source. In September 2026 ChatGPT cited Reddit in 2.6 percent of English answers, against 33.2 percent for Perplexity, despite OpenAI's data partnership with Reddit since May 2024.

Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google? OpenAI documents Bing for Enterprise and Edu workspaces and says the consumer product "sometimes partners with other search providers". A Semrush experiment in August 2025 found ChatGPT Plus using Google. In our data, the sources ChatGPT cites overlap with Google's top results about a third as often as other engines' sources do.

Does Claude cite Reddit? Not in our September 2026 data. Claude did not cite reddit.com once.

Which AI engine cites Reddit the most? Perplexity, by a wide margin. A third of its English answers cite Reddit.

Does ranking on Google get me cited by ChatGPT? Less than it does with other engines. Only 5.7 percent of the domains ChatGPT cites also appear in Google's top results for the same question, against 15 to 16 percent for Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.

How can I see which sources AI engines cite for my brand? Put your buyers' questions to each engine and record the citations behind every answer. Beaconn does this across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude and shows, question by question, the sources each engine relied on and the brands it named.
